Wayne Herman Selchow, age 74, of Lester Prairie passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2009 at Glencoe Regional Health Services.
He was born on July 29, 1935 in Arlington the son of Fred & Anita Panning Selchow.
Wayne was baptized on August 11,1935 at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Arlington by Pastor Robert Heidmann. He was also instructed in the Lutheran Catechism and confirmed in the Christian faith on April 10, 1949 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Bergen Township, McLeod County by Pastor Bert Streufert.
He graduated from Lester Prairie High School in 1953 and honorably served his Country in The United States Army in post-war Korea.
On June 12, 1965, Wayne H. Selchow & Violet L. Busch were joined in holy marriage at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine by Pastor O.F. Herder. God blessed their marriage with six children.
Wayne was formerly employed by Herb Birkholz in building construction. He later worked at Tonka Toys in Mound until 1984 and then at Lester Prairie Schools for eighteen years as a custodian. Wayne retired following a stroke in 2001. Through the years, Wayne raised beef cattle and chickens on his family farm in Bergen Township, four miles west of Lester Prairie.
Wayne enjoyed fishing with his sons, watching the Twins and Vikings on T.V. He enjoyed his family, especially his thirteen grandchildren. Wayne was fond of traveling and was a very easy going person.
He was a faithful member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. Wayne was a past Congregation President and a former Elder. He belonged to The Men’s Club and was a longtime choir member. Wayne & Violet were also former church custodians.
Survived by his wife: Violet L. Selchow; six children: Carolyn (James) Toenies of Lester Prairie, Jennifer (Loren) Vanderlinde of St. Bonifacius, Laura Duenow of Hutchinson, Glenn Selchow of Howard Lake, Paul (Joleen) Selchow of Priest River, Idaho and Douglas (Rachel) Selchow of Menomonie, Wisconsin; thirteen grandchildren: Kelli, Katie & Jacob Paschke; Valerie, Matthew & Karen Vanderlinde; Joshua, Alex and Chad Duenow; Emily & Eric Selchow and Jordan & Morgan Selchow; a brother and a sister: Verndale Selchow and Joyce Miller both of Lester Prairie; a sister-in-law: Edna Ide of Glencoe; mother-in-law: Myrtle Busch of Glencoe; many other relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by his parents: Fred & Anita Selchow, a sister-in-law: Lor Jean Selchow, father-in-law: George Busch and by a brother-in-law: Vernon Ide.
Funeral services for Wayne Selchow will be held on Wednesday, August 5th at 11:00 A.M. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. Pastor David R. Erbel will officiate. Organist will be Luke Dahl and the Church Choir sang “Abide with Me”. Congregational hymns will be “Beautiful Savior” and “On Eagles’ Wings and “Jesus Thy Blood and Righteousness . Interment follows at Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 4th from 4-8 P.M. at The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted. A Prayer service will be held at 7:30 P.M.
Further visitation will be held on Wednesday, August 5th at the church one hour prior to services.
Casket Bearers will be Gary Selchow, Lee Selchow, Kevin Selchow, Joey Miller, Ryan Ide and Jeff Brelje.
