Wallace “Wally Chanku was born to Edward and Annie (Stand Fast) Chanku on February 4, 1945 at The Long Hollow Community. Wallace attended the Long Hollow Day School until the 8th grade when he moved into Sisseton with his parents and finished his education there. He entered into The United States Army in 1967 and was honorably discharged in 1969. Wallace married Carla Bird in Wheaton, Minnesota. No children were born to this union. Carla preceded him in death. He worked in various positions and places including Anchorage, Alaska, returning home he worked for Kenneth Roth for twenty years. He then worked for Long Hollow Sanitation, Dakota Magic, Watertown Tree Nursery and Tiospa Zina Tribal School. Wallace also cared for three Hunpa children: Melvin “Sonny” Chanku Jr., Elizabeth Twilling and Raven Two Hearts all of Sisseton, South Dakota. Wallace leaves behind two sisters: Margaret Yellow Back of Sisseton, South Dakota and Gladys Davenport-Conquering Bear of Colorado Springs, Colorado; other relatives and friends. In addition to his wife, Wallace was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Melvin Chanku Sr. and Walter Chanku Sr., four brothers in infancy, sisters: Marion Chanku LaCroix, Estelle Owen and two sisters in infancy.
