She began her nursing profession at the Glencoe Hospital. She joined St. Mary’s Hospital of Winsted at its inception.

The thirteen acres of land which St. Mary’s was built on was owned by Valarie’s father-in-law and mother-in-law, Martin and Rosa (Kohler) Hertzog. This property was sold to the hospital association donating half of the value.

Thirty years ago she was a passenger in a fatal car accident claiming the life of two co-workers and close friends Verla Rathmanner and Delores Sexton. Also, in the accident was Airi Davidson. To Val’s family; May your memories sustain you through this time. Val was one of the nicest people that I ever met in Winsted. She never judged others and she was always kind. I used to talk to her as I walked my dog. Find comfort in knowing she is watching over all of you.
