Reed Wendell “Wendy” Louis, age 66, of Old Agency Village, SD, journeyed to the Spirit World Friday, August 24, 2007.
Reed Wendell Louis was born on March 24, 1941, to Vera Cassel and Clifford Feather Sr. in Sisseton, SD. Wendy spent most of his childhood years in Peever and Big Coulee, SD. His family eventually moved to Waukegan, IL, where Wendy went to high school for a short time. He graduated from Flandreau Indian School in 1960.
After graduating from high school, Wendy returned to Waukegan and became an accomplished metal lathe operator. He married Genivieve Cisneros, and they had a daughter, Leslie.
Wendy enlisted in the US Marine Corps in March, 1961, and was honorably discharged in February, 1967. They then moved back to Big Coulee, where his daughter Lucinda was born.
Wendy had an interest in cars, baseball, and softball. He was a catcher and shortstop. He was a big fan of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears. He continued to play softball, and was inducted into the Big Jim Crawford Memorial Awards.
Wendy was a member of The Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate. He worked for several tribal organizations, and greatly enjoyed his co-workers.
Wendell is survived by: 2 daughters: Leslie Drywater of Muskogee, OK and Lucinda (Seabouy) Louis of Washington, IN, 1 grandchild; sister: Janice Blue of Flandreau; brothers: Monte Louis of Chicago and David Louis of Big Coulee; special friend: Connie Rodlund and her children & grandchildren.
Wendy is preceded in death by his parents Clifford Feather Sr., Vera & Phillip Louis; brothers: Eddie Bourelle, Mickey Louis, & Sonny Feather; sister: Josephine LaPointe; nephews: Brian Bourelle and Murphy Hill; and one very special niece: Sheena Thompson.
An all night wake was held on Sunday, August 26th beginning at 7:00 P.M.
Funeral services for Reed “Wendy” Louis were held on Monday, August 27th at 2:00 P.M. at The Community Center in Old Agency Village, South Dakota. Rev. Floyd Heminger, Rev. Enright Bighorn and Gerald Heminger, Jr. officiated at the service.
Honorary Casket Bearers were: Iver Cloud, Delbert Pumkin Seed, Lincoln DeMarrias, Reed’s seven grandchildren, Gerald Thompson, Sr., Richard Lake, Jeff Schoenrock, all other relatives and friends.
The honor guard for the military rites at Ascension Presbyterian Cemetery was conducted by the Vietnam Veterans Assoc. Kit Fox Society.
Casket Bearers were: Joshua Kohl, Murray Bourelle, Francis “Kojak” Heminger, Gabe Rodlund, Gene Heminger and Alex Heminger.
