Mitchell Joseph Keoke, age 30, of Sisseton, South Dakota journeyed to the Spirit World at Coteau des Prairies Hospital on June 4th, 2008 from injuries received in a auto/pedestrian accident. He was born on July 8, 1977 is Sisseton, SD to Iris Keoke & Floyd Paul. Mitchell attended grade school in Browns, Valley Mn and attended Jr. High School and High School at Tiospa Zina Tribal School. Mitchell lived all of his life on the Sisseton Rez & was a member of Bde Hda Kinyan Oyate.

Mitchell in his early years stayed with various uncles & aunties from Lake Traverse, the Ray Shepherd & Ramona Keeble family and Pam & Mark Keoke family.

Mitchell was like his uncle “Cooter” and was a jack of all trades. Mitch graduated from 8th grade from TZ along with his brother, Curtis Bissonette, Justin Paul & Eugene Bissonette. He received numerous awards. Mitch attended Flandreau Indian School in his sophomore year for a month and returned to Pam & Mark Keoke’s residence and continued his education at Tiospa Zina. He received his GED and was the “Babysitter” for his many nieces and nephews that he loved dearly. Mitch met Carrie Shepherd in December 2004 and to this union a daughter, Adreanna Jaclene was born on December 28, 2005 and were his pride and joy! Mitch and Carrie married on November 8, 2006 and lived in Enemy Swim until he and his family moved to Sisseton, SD in February 2007. Mitch enjoyed playing basketball, all his video games and was a Indianapolis Colts fan. He liked to play whist, board games in his free time and listen to music. He was also a very talented artist. Mitch was employed at Dakota Magic for a short time in the restaurant and was presently employed at Dakota Connection Surveillance Department. Mitch is survived by his wife: Carrie Keoke and daughter Adreanna and sons: Dylan & Frankie Shepherd; his mother: Iris Keoke of Lake Traverse; brothers: Francis Craw ford and Donald Red Owl of Sisseton, Vernon Red Owl of Sioux Falls, Benjamin Castor of Rapid City and James Greene of Enemy Swim and one sister: Jessie Keoke of Sheridan, WY; aunties: Doris, Louella, Zelma Paul, Inez Owen and Marva Shepherd; uncles: Joe, Stanley and David Paul, Bill Keoke, Darrell S. Renville & Mark Keoke; grandmothers: Arlene Miller and Arlene Spider; his co-workers at Dakota Connection Surveillance Department. He was preceded in death by his father: Floyd Paul, brothers: Jonathan Red Owl, Joshua Shepherd, Uriah Redday and Brandon Redday, and his nephew: Marquette Crawford; Aunties: Norma Bush and Bernice Paul and Uncle: Quinton “Cooter” Spider; grandmothers: Lottie “Joyce” Keoke, Catherine Drum, Philomene Stanton and Etta Red Fox Paul and grandpas: Marquette Keoke and Clarence Paul.

Funeral Services for Mitchell Koeke were held on Monday, June 9th at 2:00 P.m. at The Community Center in Old Agency Village, South Dakota. Reverend Enright Big Horn, CLP Filmore Simon, Elder J.C. Crawford and Mr. Levi Keoke officiated. Interment followed at Lake Traverse Presbyterian Cemetery. Special music was provided by Joe & Kathy White and the pianist was Kay Bursheim.

An all night wakes were held on Friday, June 6th, Saturday, June 7th and Sunday, June 8th beginning at 7:00 P.M.

Honorary Casket Bearers were all of Mitchell’s relatives, friends and co-workers at Dakota Connection.

Casket Bearers were Ray Shepherd III, Brandon Shepherd, Daniel Shepherd, Brice McKay, Kip Renville, Brian Renville Sr. Corey Shepherd, Kerry Sullivan, John Renville III and Joseph Paul III.
