Visitation Information

Melvin Chanku Sr., of Long Hollow, South Dakota journeyed to the Spirit World on Monday, June 8, 2009 at Coteau des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton, South Dakota at 7:30 A.M. at the age of 66.

He was born on August 1, 1942, in Sisseton, South Dakota the son of Edward and Annie Chanku.

Melvin was united in marriage to Lois Smith. Into this union he had three children.

Melvin Sr. loved to go to the casinos, visit with family and friends and his grandkids.

He was a carpenter and construction worker. He helped with the Dakota Dome in Vermillion, South Dakota in the 1970’s. Melvin also did mechanic work.

Survived by his children: Deborah Chanku and Melvin Chanku Jr. both of Sisseton, South Dakota and Deanna Anderson of Morris, Minnesota; eight grandchildren, nineteen great grandchildren; a brother: Wallace Chanku of Sisseton, South Dakota; three sisters: Marion LaCroix of Sisseton, South Dakota, Gladys Davenport of Colorado Spring, Colorado and Margaret Yellowback of Sisseton, South Dakota; many other relatives and friends.

Preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.

Funeral service for Melvin Chanku Sr. will be held on Thursday, June 11th at 2:00 P.M. at The Community Center in Old Agency Village, South Dakota. Reverend Clifford Canku, Reverend Filmore Simon and Reverend Vern Donnell will officiate. Interment Long Hollow Cemetery.

Special music by Carl Lufkins Sr., Big Coulee Choir, Sylvester Yellowback and Joe & Kathy White.

All night wakes will be held on Tuesday, June 9th and Wednesday, June 10th beginning at 7:00 P.M. at The Community Center in Old Agency Village, South Dakota.

Honorary Casket Bearers will be all his friends and relatives.

Casket Bearers will be Vince Owen, Russell Smith, Narcisse Lufkins, Bernard Two Hearts, Roger Ortley, Rayce Hill, Sylvester Goodteacher, Jonas Keeble, Franklyn Keeble Sr., Milo Sanchez, John Redday Sr., Jess Chanku and Carl Lufkins Sr.

    I’m so sorry to hear about the passing of Melvin, Clayton and I will always remember him as a kind person, always joking and just having a good time. he will be greatly missed. I wish we knew of his passing so we could have come back to Sisseton to pay our respect. our prayers go to his children. grandchildren and rest of the family.
    may grandfather guide him on his journey to meet his Mother and father.
