Marilyn Faye Wakeman, aged 68, of Flandreau, South Dakota, journeyed to the Spirit World peacefully on August 22nd, 2023, at her home with her family by her side. Marilyn was born on November 16th, 1954, to Clarence and Flora Delorme on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in North Dakota.

Marilyn was one of 15 children and often recalled her love of riding horses through the forested hills of her childhood home. She attended multiple boarding schools throughout her youth. It wasn’t until she became a student at the Flandreau Indian School that she met her soulmate, Francis Wakeman Jr. It was love at first sight and two weeks later the married-on July 6th, 1971. Marilyn and her husband moved across the country many times before eventually settling down in Flandreau, South Dakota.

Marilyn was a dedicated, hard worker, who, once in a job, stayed with it, no matter the cost.  She worked at John Morell’s in Sioux Falls for many years and later worked at the Royal River Casino & Hotel, before leaving and opening the Pejutasapa Coffee shop. She was an incredible mother and grandmother; after raising her children, she lovingly raised her three grandchildren as her own, Jordan Faye Curry, Francis Oliver Eastman and Rachel Flora Wakeman, always placing their needs before her own.

Marilyn collected turtle and clown figurines; enjoyed listening to classic rock, such as the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Bob Seger, who she often compared his looks to her brother Donzold. Throughout her life, she was known as a tough woman, who defied the odds and fought fiercely against anything in her way. She was often seen riding behind her husband on his motorcycle or working alongside him mowing lawns. She enjoyed gambling, going out to restaurants, and the true love of her life, sugar and anything made with it. In her final years, she was finally able to relax and enjoy the peaceful life she deserved and always dreamed. She enjoyed spending time with her son, grandchildren, and sister-in-law, Debra Wakeman; going on many adventures, camping trips and gambling expeditions throughout the region.

Her journey has reunited her with her loving husband, Francis Wakeman Jr, her parents, Flora Davis and Clarence Delorme, her four brothers Charles, Daryl, Eddie, and Donzold Delorme, and her grandson, Ronnie.

She leaves behind her son, Francis Wakeman III, granddaughter, Rachel Wakeman, grandson, Rufus Wakeman, sister-in-law, Debra Wakeman, her surviving sisters and brothers: Wanda & Michael Pond (Billings, MT), , Carol Delorme (Minot, ND), Sharon Delorme (St. Mary’s, PA), Marlys Delorme (Seattle, WA), Alisa and Kehar Singh (Las Vegas, NV), Lorrie DeCoteau (Belcourt, ND), her Brothers: Carl (Bismark, ND), Ronnie and Debra (North Platte, NE), Albert and Michele (Belcourt, ND), Jeff and Sherri (Rolette, ND). Grandchildren; Jordan & Tate Curry Sr., Francis Oliver Eastman. And 7 Great-grandchildren.
