Canpa Ista Win (Chokecherry Eyes Woman) also known as Lois Jean (Heminger) Jackson, age 73, of Sisseton, SD journeyed to the Spirit World on Friday, August 18, 2023.
She was born on March 30, 1950 in Sisseton, SD the daughter of LeRoy and Elsie (Feather) Heminger.
Lois attended boarding school until the fourth grade then moved in with the Crawford family. Following high school, Lois graduated from Morris College.
She worked for her tribe and the Federal Government, retiring in 2010.
Lois had many hobbies but her favorites were reading and sewing. She traveled a lot through the years and made many friends who later became her family.
She was a great, great, great granddaughter of Chief Little Crow.
Survived by her children Gary Montreal Jr and Lanise “Nece” Montreal; brother Francis “Tato” Heminger Sr.; twenty-two grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. She is also survived by her loving companion Brian Robertson.
Preceded in death by her daughter Lisa DeMarrias; her parents; grandparents Rev. Albert and Ruth (Wakeman) Heminger, Silas and Lillian (DeCoteau) Feather; brothers Alex Heminger, Tony Johnson, Terry Heminger, Leroy Heminger Jr.; sisters Ramona Walker, Cynthia Wolfe, Beverly McKinney and Peggy Thompson; step-brothers and step-sisters; best friend Linda Crawford; and first cousin Russell Means.
Lois wanted to acknowledge special family members including Hunka Brothers Dennis Gill, Charles Gerad, Darrin, Marlon and Steve Amos and Gerald Amos; Hunka Sisters Carol Jordan, Linda Crawford, Collette, Caril and Jennie Amos.
Celebration of Life for Lois Jackson will be held on Saturday, August 26, 2023 at 12:00 Noon at the S.W.O. Community Center in Old Agency Village, SD. CRE Gerald Heminger Jr. will officiate. Special music by Billy Kohl.
Honorary urn bearers will be all of Lois’ family and friends, Carol Jordan, Steve Jackson Jr., and Amilika Jackson.
Urn bearer will be William DeMarrias Jr.
We are so thankful for the light that dear Lois brought into our lives.
We wish Lois’s family strength and peace during this challenging time.
