Gavin Vernon Shortman, age 43, of Rosholt, South Dakota journeyed to the Spirit World on Saturday, April 24, 2010 at Coteau des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton, South Dakota.
He was born on August 31, 1966 in Sisseton, South Dakota the son of Donald Shortman and Gail L. Barse.
Gavin attended schools at Peever Public School, Sisseton Middle School and Pierre Learning Center when he set a record as weight lifter. He attended Kicking Horse Jobs Corps in Montana where he received his GED.
He was employed in road construction at The Dakota Sioux Casino and other employement as a laborer.
Gavin was a life-long resident of The Lake Traverse Sisseton-Wahpeton Reservation.
Gavin lived at Lake Traverse with his family Gavlynn, Mona, Kendall & Samantha Shortman and Fern Keeble.
He liked to have cookouts, listen to his favorite songs and laugh with his brothers and sisters. Gavin also liked to play horse shoes, cards, dominos, just hanging out and cooking.
He really loved spending time with his girls! Gavin enjoyed spearing and fishing down on Lake Traverse.
He will be sadly missed by his family and friends!
Survived by his father: Donald Lee Shortman; his mother: Gail L. Barse; loving companion: Fern Keeble; daughters: Gavlynn Shortman, Mona Shortman, Kendall Shortman and Samatha Shortman; a brother: Quentin Barse; brothers & sisters who reside in Montana: Divie Lee Shorman, Farrell Shorthman, Danalda Shortman, Danna Shortman, John Grant, Dawn Marie Schaeffer and Edward Lavenger; many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Gavin Shortman will be held on Wednesday, April 28th at 2:00 P.M. at The Community Center in Old Agency Village, South Dakota. Pastor Eugene King Sr., Father Charles Chan, John Cloud III, Gerald Heminger Jr. and Pastor Jim Muskrat will officiate. Interment St. Mary’s Episcopal Cemetery.
An all night wake will be held TODAY, Tuesday, April 27th beginning at 7:00 P.M. at The Community Center in Old Agency Village, South Dakota.
Special music will be provide by Old Agency Drum Group-Bernard Brothers
Pianist will be Kaye Bursheim.
Honorary Pallbearers: All of his friends and relatives.
Casket Bearers will be Romeo Renville, Curt Snow, Todd Marks, Michael LaFontaine, Allen Shepherd, Dean Renville, Leonard Shepherd and Brandon Shepherd.

Gail, I’m so very sorry for your loss. I have very good memories of Gavin that will last forever. The last time I saw him was a few months ago and he was happy and joking with me like he would always do. He will always have a special place in my heart and in my memories. I send my most sincere and deepest empathy to you and Gavin’s children and extended family.
