Benedict J. “Gentle Ben” Weinbeck, age 86, of Winsted, MN passed away on Wednesday May 19, 2010 at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted, MN.
Ben was born on March 15, 1924 the son of Henry and Anna (Rohling) Weinbeck in Winsted, MN.
Ben was united in Marriage to Irene Mary (Munoz) on October 23, 1960, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oakdale, CA.
Ben was a prominent member of the Winsted community. As a two term mayor, he was responsible for many improvements to his beloved community such as modernizing the municipal sewage system and making the Winsted airport municipal. He donated the family farmland to the community for use as athletic fields to honor his mother’s wishes. He was well-known for his quick wit, practical jokes and jovial personality.
He and his wife ran the Winsted movie theatre for 25 years as well as Benny’s Kool-it and Maria’s Kool-it in Howard Lake, providing jobs for many teenagers. He was devoted to his country and proudly served in WWII as a B-26 Gunner. After being injured on his 43rd mission, he served as a German translator. He was a true patriot and loved his country dearly.
Ben is survived by his loving family: wife, Irene; children, Charlene (John) Lueck, Joseph (Kathy) Weinbeck, Cheri (Tom) Olive, Wyman(Susie) Weinbeck, Benny (Darcy) Weinbeck, Maria Weinbeck (Robert Owens), Julie Baruch, Henry (Kristin) Weinbeck, Jason Weinbeck; 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; siblings, Sister Alexis Weinbeck, School Sisters of St. Francis, of Campbellsport, WI, Margaret (Jerry) Nouis of Spring Lake Park, MN. Son-in-law, John Guider Sr. of North Oaks, MN.
He is preceded in death by: daughter Beverly Guider; sister Mary LaMothe, brothers John, Eugene, Albert, and Leo; and parents Henry and Anna Weinbeck.
Mass of Christian burial will take place Saturday, May 22 at 10:30 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted with interment at the church cemetery.
Visitation is Friday, May 21 from 4 to 8 pm at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, and will continue Saturday, beginning at 9:30 at the funeral home.
