March 17, 1947 – January 20, 2023

Russell Gene Smith (Oyate Waokiye Wicasta) age 75, of Sisseton journeyed to the Spirit World on Friday, January 20, 2023. He was born in Sisseton, South Dakota on March 17, 1947, the son of Leon G. and Doris (Driver) Smith.

Russell retired from CHR following 32 years of service. Family time was important to him, as well as community work. Russell advocated for his Dakota people. He was a Sundancer and a Pipe Carrier. Russell enjoyed cutting wood, rummage sales, and harvesting Sage and medicines.

Survived by his significant other: Marlys BlueDog; children: Carolyn Soles, Daniel Smith, Lisa Smith, and Brandi Smith; step-children: Corwin, Rafeal, Lena, Dillon, and Randall BlueDog; 29 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; sisters: Lois Smith, Pat Oceguera, Janell Cook, and Sherri DeMarrias ; many other relatives and friends.

Russell was preceded in death by sons: Lance Miner, Casey Smith, and Corey Cadotte; a step-daughter: Sheridan BlueDog; sister: Claudia; and brother: Jerry DeMarrias Jr.

Funeral Services for Russell Smith will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 at 10 A.M. at the SWO Community Center in Agency Village, South Dakota. Tom DeCoteau Jr. will be the spiritual leader. All sundancers and singers are welcome.

Visitations will be held on Monday, January 23, 2023 at the SWO Community Center from 7-10 P.M. AND Tuesday (All Night) January, 24, 2023.

Spring Interment at Driver Family Cemetery- Long Hollow

    Russell was one of the best, he was always so thoughtful and caring, a true advocate for the Oyate.
    I’m sure going to miss him.
    His decorations in his yard were loved by so many.
    Give my momma a hug I’m sure she’ll be happy to see you again.
