Gerald Herman “Jerry” Karels, age 68, of Winsted, died Wednesday, July 28, 2010 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

He was born in Winsted on September 12, 1941 the son of John & Marie Otto Karels.

Jerry graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1959. Following graduation, he attended Dunwoody Institute for two years and learned to be a tool and die maker.

He honorably served his Country in The United States Army from 1960 until 1962.

On April 18, 1964, Gerald Karels and Patricia Smith were joined in holy marriage at St. Adalbert Catholic Church in Silver Lake. God blessed their marriage with four sons.

Jerry was formerly employed at Tonka Toys in Mound and later at Hutchinson Technology.

He was a faithful, lifelong member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted and presently served his parish as Cemetery Sexton.

Jerry also belonged to Catholic Order of Foresters, Holy Trinity Court #1054.

Survived by loving wife of forty five years: Patricia J. Karels; sons: Neal Karels of Hutchinson, Steve (Julie) Karels of Winsted, Paul (Trisha) Karels of Brownton and Joel (Christene) Karels of Winsted; grandchildren: Nicole, Hannah, Hillary, Ben, Max, Mikayla, Aleksey, Blake, Seth, Tucker, Rylan and Joslyn; sisters and brothers: Mary Ann Neumann, Ron (Dorothy) Karels, John “Jack” (Shirley) Karels, Vonnie (Jack) Barrett and Susan Karels; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law: Doris Fasching of Hutchinson, John Smith of Columbus, Ohio, Mary Ellen Staples of Monticello and Beverly Bebeau of Big Lake; many other relatives and friends.

Preceded in death by his parents, in-laws: Howard and Bernice Smith, a sister: Delores “Sis” Provencher, and two infant sisters.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Gerald “Jerry” Karels was held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 31st at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. Father Tony Hesse was the Celebrant and interment with military rites followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery.

The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
